Here's a checklist of things you do.

1) Check to make sure your microphone is plugged into the microphone port on your sound card. You should see a microphone icon nearby a red-color jack. -- I know it sounds stupid, but it's a pretty common error.

2) Check your volume controls. Check BOTH your playback & record settings.

On the playback side, you should have your microphone muted. This is to prevent you from hearing yourself speak through your speakers & cause some nasty echo effects.

On the recording side, you should have your microphone selected & set to a volume that works for your set up.

3) Load up the Sound recorder (or Audacity, if you prefer) & first off a couple of test recordings.

If you see some action inside the program, you're good to go!

If not (all you get is a flat line), something may be wrong with the microphone or your sound card. Try a different microphone first before try calling tech support.

If you are using an lcd monitor which includes the speakers. You might have to unplug the lcd speaker wire from the back of your computer, which i learned disabled the regular sound input devices that you might plug into the back of your computer. Try unplugging the lcd sound as I said and then continue as normal with plugging your microphone into its corresponding spot, if that isnt the situation. Try some of the things listed above in previous answers.
