a cultural belief.

In the US, thousands of babies are opperated on every year because their genitals don't look the way doctors or parents prefer them to look. And i'm not only talking about circumscision. I'm referring to intersexes, many of which do not need surgery for health reasons, humans whose bodies are mutilated by doctors and/or parents wishes for cosmetic reasons, despite the fact that that baby may loose sensations, and may need to continue undergoing surgery for the rest of their life from there.

=(

cultural ideas of what bodies are supposed to do, and supposed to look like =(

International intersex solidarity day is nov 8th ^_~

This happens to young women and is part of their culture. I believe that many young women of today are trying not to have it done. And there is a great deal of education being injected into the communities within Africa to give them an understanding of just how dangerous this really is. I believe it has a lot to do with a rite of passage into women hood, and also in some way they believe that sex is not for the female pleasure but only for procreation. And this will somehow keep young women from being promiscoious. This is a very painful process and has lasting effects. Many grown women if they come to the Untied States try very hard to have surgery to repair. As a women one could only imagine how horrible this would be. God Bless

It's not a simple answer, but I'll try to explain:
Female Genital Mutilation( FGM) is, to some parts & cultures, a rite of passage into womanhood. Girls who refuse it are stigmatised in their tribe. Also, the clitoris is viewed as the 'root' of promiscuity. Therefore a 'chaste & honest' woman would be proud to uundergo the ritual to prove to all that she is.
However, most modern african ladies shun it nowadays.(myself included). It is mostly a thing of the past.
hope i've helped

This is a horrible atrocity. It is done becuase men are afraid of a woman's sexuality. They do not want women to enjoy sex, so they mutilate her by removing her clitoris (and sometimes cutting up the labia and sewing them shut) so that sex will be unbearably painful. This is not at all lakin to male circumcision. It is torture and mutilation! The men are afraid of the power of women and want to subjugate them in any way they can.

so the african men could go hunting without worries about cheating wife. Wealthy countries should help Africa improve their social structure, but of course not like in Algeria or Rwanda

it's not by choice, it's by tradition & it's called genital mutiliation - the men in these African tribes do not think a woman should have sexual pleasure so they remove the clitoris - how inhumane.

People of certain cultures believe that sex is for procreation only...not for pleasure...so the clitoris is removed or circumcised.

This is an awful thing...I love my clitoris!!!
