It was foretold that a son born of Devaki should kill him.Hence he decided to keep Devaki and Vasudev together in Jail till their 8th child was born, to make the prophacy false. He endeavored to destroy all her children, and he murdered the first six children. The next was 7th Balarama, who wase saved by moving them to Rohini's womb. It was due to Kamsa's attempts at preventing the prophecy that led to it coming true, hence it was a self-fulfilling prophecy.
When Krishna the eighth was born his parents fled with him. The tyrant then gave orders for a general massacre of all vigorous male infants. Kansa became the great persecutor of Krishna, but was eventually killed by him.

Tradfitionally, most of our epics depict the conflicts of life in a heroic manner and the basic purpose is to further the story line.
Kansa could have:
a. Killed both husband & wife
b. Separated them and kept them in prison
c. Gone for certain birth control measures on the couple
But that would not serve the basic purpose of an epic. The characterisation has to look natural & contemporary. So, Kansa is shown as loving & caring for the couple and he ends up in creating a situation where, ironically, the 'destiny', ultimately, plays its role. He is made a victim of human weakness and he is made to -ERR.
That's what makes the story move ahead and that too with a great impact.

I think you have received several justified answers to your question!! Let me add that we are also fools even after receiving quitw a few forewarnings and continue to do the thing which are banned. For example, we all know that Cigarette smoking can cause cancers and insome the initial signs of perennila cough manifests, but still we smoke and kill ourselves. We all know that the nature's equilibrium is to be preserved lest natural calamities will manifest but we do precisely imbalance them. As a small kid, your parents would have warned you not to bite your nails but still you did precisely that. Many such examples can be sited. When someone says "NO" we believe that its beacuse ofa hidden YES and we do just that. Kansa was no exception.

Hey:
There was a phrophecy that Kansa would be killed by his sister son and so when she got married he imprisoned her hubby and her!He killed every child she had to save himself but he didnot know that Lord Krsna will be alive-his sister son!
You have the answer right there!Kansa the vicious demon didnot want to die so he believed that if he kept his sister and her husband in jail then every child they had he would kill and remove the threat on his life!
He loved his sister very much and just not to kill her after her wedding he locked her up and would rather kill the child that the phrophecy said would destroy him rather than his beloved sister and her new husband!
Love SANAM

I suggest you view the TV serial Mahabharata made by BR Chopra.. it is quite authentic and have all replies to such questions.
He kept his sis and her hubby in jail...so that when ever a child is born to them, he could kill them. If they were free they could have run away and hidden
He however did not kill his sis because he loved Devki so much..and did not want to harm her..just wished to kill her children to save his life.

kansa is not stupid but a arrogant person
the prophecy was that his sister's child will kill him. so he could have just separated his sister from his husband but he thought that it would be his 'glory' if he killed the person who is going to kill him. he also might have kept his sister & her husband alive just to kill their born child(not out of love for his sister). It was an act of 'pride' rather than stupidity

He did not want to kill them(sis and hubby) but he was so arrogant and ignorant that he thought if they are in jail and even if they gave birth to the said child he could kill it.He actually wanted to prove that he could change fate and prophecy by killing his killer. But alas things didn't turn out as he thought.

As u know kamsa, hope u have heard of the saying "VINAASHAKALAE VIPAREETHA BHUTHI " also. It means "If ur time is bad, then ur brain works negatively". Kamsa's fate was written already so he could think only in that way..His brain wouldn't work properly. Somehow fate has to attain its destiny.
