If you are quite sure that you haven't unwittingly joined a book club and you actually like the book that they have sent you or you could imagine it would be a good Christmas pressie for your grandma or someone, drop them a line/e-mail saying that it was nice of them to send you a free gift. If you receive no reply, then accept that that was what it was and use it accordingly.

If they ask you to return it but you really want to keep it, reply saying it was an unsolicited gift and you have accepted it as such. That will teach them for sending out mail willy nilly. I was sent a set of 5 Disney books once that I didn't ask for and two book ends in the shape of Mickey Mouse and did this. It made a nice present for my niece.

If you don't want the book, you could return it to them without paying the postage and they will be asked to pay at their end or e-mail them and ask for pre-paid envelope to return it. Why should you have to pay the postage?

If you haven't signed anything or verbally or electronically not agreed to buy anything, then in law no contract exists between you and whoever sent you the book. It is simply unsolicited material that you should send back ( request a prepaid postage sticker ) or write to them and ask them to arrange collection. Whatever you do, always keep a copy of all correspondence, emails, telephone calls etc. But do ask yourself, why did they send the book in the first place? Did you prompt that in some way? Was the book on approval pending its possible purchase? If it gets really heavy, talk to your local trading standards office or Citizens Advice Bureau. Good luck!

They'll probably bill you for it whether you've order it or not. If there's a phone number on the packaging, give them a call and ask what the arrangement is for sending it back - they may arrange for a courier/pre-paid label. Tell them you don't want anything else sending. I know when I worked for a book club, they didn't respond to letters of complaint and their return address was different from the sent from address, to it's worth giving them a call.

Yes. When they send you the book, they are making you an offer. If you accept it, then you are entering a contract with them and are obligated to pay.

If you haven't opened it, put "return to sender" on the package and put it in the mail. If you have opened it, contact the company and explain the situation. Keep a long of the dates, times and names of the people that you speak to.

phone the company and arrange for them to send you a prepaid sticker so you can return the book. Make it clear that you did not order this and want no more books sent to you - also put this in writing and keep a copy.

This happened to me earlier this year, so I phoned them and told them they had breached my right to confidenitiality under the Data Protection Act by buying by name from someone else and I would be sueing them in a court of law, unless they sent me a return label, an official letter of apology and removed my details from their computer.

They complied quickly.

If you haven't joined the club, it can be classed as unsolicited mail.
