If you mean TV series go for Batman- The animated series(80's/90's) and check out the Justice League and Justice league unlimited animated series' as well, Batman Beyond/of the future is a good series but its just not the "real" Batman and personally i don't rate the latest animated series (The Batman) at all, too many changes in character for my taste. If you mean comics then it is a bit more difficult.
Detective comics and Batman have stories that regularly cross over so it is best to collect both titles as if you only get one, you will occasionally have to pick up the other one as well. You may well have to pick up issues of Robin and/or JLA to keep up with some storylines but its not usually essential that you do so. All star Batman and Robin, Batman confidential and Legends of the Dark Knight/Batman feature stories outside of the regular continuity so you get something a bit different. Superman & Batman is also good if you like Supes as well. As for films, just collect all of them and enjoy Batman Begins, Tim Burton's Batman and Batman returns then watch the rest and wonder to yourself "what the hell happend here!". The 60's tv series and film are good for a laugh but just dont expect the same Batman that you see in the comics and other more recent media. And on top of all that there are still somethings avaliable that i havent mentioned!

I think you need to be more specific. What are you referring to? Comics? Cartoons? Movies?
Comic's: Checkout old back issues of "Detective Comics" and "Shadow of the Bat". Some good storylines were "Knightfall" in 1993 which deals with all the inmates escaping from Arkham Asylum, and "No Man's Land" from 1999 which deals with most of Gotham City being destroyed by an earthquake, the total chaos that results, and a state of Martial Law being declared.
Cartoons : Season 1 and 2 of "Batman the Animated Series" from the early 1990's.
Movies: "Batman Begins" from 2005 and "Batman Returns" from 1992.

Talking about cartoons, i recommend you "Batman : The Aniamted Series", the best Batman cartoon so far. with Emmy awards, more than 60 episodes, young and adult fans over the world, spawing toys, comic book, direct home videos, movies... wow, it is the best. Check websites like ebay.co.uk and u will find the dvd set, there are four, they are great with a lot of featurettes.
About movies, i like th eone directed by tim burton. but this franchaise is ended, so if u want to catch something new i recommmned u batman begings, the new movie is tio be released in 2008, and be sure wll have mor ethan 2 good movies...

Batman the Animated series. from the very first episode to the episode sometime before it turned into Batman & Superman. Those were the best.

Are we talking comics here? About 13 years ago, there was a great series called "nightfall" in which Batman is defeated (barely) by Bane, he has Azreal replace him, Azreal goes crazy, and batman has to begin his training from scratch (his back was broken) to defeat the crazy new batman and reclaim his throne... every issue was epic. Check it out...Especially the anthology "Knight's End"

Animated: 2nd season of the 90's batman show
T.v/film: adam west is the most consistently entertaining
comics: Dark Knight returns is fairly old, but the dennis o'neil detective man-bat ras alghul collections are gripping and suspenseful. or the alan grant run of the mid-late 80's is good scarey stories and fairly self-contained.
books: the greatest joker stories ever told, with the short story by joe r.lansdale.

Defo the animated series. It has style, imagination, well defined characters. Heads and shoulders above any film made/to be made.
