Hi! I am moving to Edinburgh in a few months and I need to rent a flat. So I need to know the best areas to live in, close to supermarkets, good transport links, low crime rate, away from pubs and confusion, etc. And I would like to know as well, what are the areas I should avoid. Thank you for your help.

I was told to stay away from Leith. Do you mean to stay away from the area between city centre and the ocean terminal, or the area between Leith walk and Ferry Rd?
Is ocean terminal a good area to live in?
Thank you all for your precious help! ;-)

I used to live in Dalry near the Haymarket. I loved it there - outskirts of the City Centre - big supermarket and lots of other shops in the immediate area. Train station close by and on all major bus routes. Definately the place i'd move to if i was moving back. Enjoy your time there - its a fantastic place.

Edinburgh is a center of all most readily useful things you are able to do, see and appreciate the city, see more with hotelbye . In Edinburg you'll find great days out and get the interior scoops on the very best little-known areas waiting to be discovered. Edinburg can be for household days out to social pursuits. Edinburgh has plenty of top attractions to meet all tastes, including some of Scotland's most visited free and paid-for attractions. The city's background of Arthur's Seat, the Pentland Hills and Edinburgh's Waterfront produce the city a remarkable place to reside your holyday.

Will you be working in Edinburgh? If so in which area of town? Good areas (arguably)! Bruntsfield, Morningside, Marchmont, Stockbridge, Any New Town areas, but expensive! Corstorphine, Murrayfield, Colinton, and many others.
Not so good, but mostly better than a few years ago! Niddrie, Granton, Parts of Leith, Gorgie, Dalry. Broomhouse, and others.
I would suggest that you had a trip up here for a weekend and take a look around the place, you would get a better idea of the layout then.
Ps I know where Portugal is!! Been there three times.

It really depends how much you're willing to spend. Very nice areas are Blackford, the Grange, Marchmont and Bruntsfield, but they are expensive.
You should avoid areas like Niddrie, Craigmillar, Wester Hailes and other areas with a lot of council estates.
Maybe you could consider Tollcross, Dalry, the Grassmarket and other areas around the centre of town. If you would rather live further away in a quieter area, you could try Corstorphine, or Buckstone.
Good luck!
Ps. I'm sure you'll love it here

Leith has got a lot of good amneties but it's a very rough area.Oxgangs is the same as Leith.I would recommend Polwarth as it is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre and has lots of shops and isn't that rough.
Depends on how much your willing to spend?ADVOID WESTER HAILES AT ALL COSTS

I lived in Edinburgh for five months about 10 years ago. First, your going to LOVE the city. It's so comfortable and exciting! I think it's a very safe city and as soon as you get oriented, you'll find it very easy to get around. I lived in Morningside and was very happy. I lived in a house for students, and made a lot of lifelong friends. Good luck and enjoy!

I agree wih moggy..avoid those areas...what about going out of town a wee bit further like Balerno, Colinton Mains, Swanson..all very good areas, not so central but you have to weigh up the pros and cons cos you cant have it all ways, town centre area is busy and noisy and more expensive, Corstorphine and Morningside are good too....good luck !!

Can you afford it? Edinburgh rents for prime property aren't cheap by any means. there's plenty of nice quieter places all around the capital with better relaxation and shopping facilities at half the rent. Portobello for example a 15 min or so journey to the centre of town
