If you're looking for the best (i.e. most profitable) bank in the world, it is Citibank, main HQ located in Canary Wharf in London (even if it is an American group).
The biggest bank in Europe is probably Gruppo Unicredit Banca Spa and The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Banks are in business to make money for their shareholders. I'm with a building society instead (Nationwide). These are owned by their members, who usually have voting rights and offer all the services a bank does. They also tend to pay better interest on your money and charge lower interest on your loans.
The other possibility are credit unions which are also member controlled. These are mainly for regular savings and loans, less likely to have a current account facility.
