The size of the water particles in mist is widely variable. Some particles are smaller than one microm while other can exceed 100 microns.

In steam (water vapor) the water exists as individual atoms, which are much smaller than the particles in mist.

Mist is of a lower temperature than steam. The kinetic energy in steam is very much higher than that of water mist.
