We very well could be. But we have no way of knowing how clever we are, or aren't, as we only have ourselves to measure against.
Having said that, most scientists think that actually, we're pretty clever, and most of the workings of the universe are not beyond our comprehension.

Yes we are. We supposedly are the beings with the advanced brains.
We have some disadvatanges to the ant. The ant people are much older than the Human people. The ants have a well established history of survival. The ants are not arrogant about what they know.
Universe means "One Song." The universe within ourselves elludes us. Our growth is to learn something and contribute.
It is only a test to impove us, so that we can finally reach the lofty maturation of the ant. .

When it comes to trying to understand the universe it makes no difference to some people,
We can only theorize about most of it.
Not like an ant or any other animal.
They do not possess the capacity to be objective!!

I like this theory: In the past we have tried to explain things, and every time we later discovered that we were wrong or not specific enough (the sun revolving around the earth, the earth being flat, medicine, the list goes on...). SO whatever we believe today is most likely wrong....but we do the best with what we got :)

If we are but ants, that is the who wants to be a millionaire question. the definitive answer is no ants are within our own web and their world belongs to ours, their is no difference between then and now. However we are but a microbe as per the MEN in BLACk around the CATS neck.
Try that one one for size.

Yeah, only I think of it this way
You in your suburb
your suburb in the city
the city in a state
the state in a country
the country on the earth
the earth in the solar system
our solar system in the milky way
the milky way in the universe
the universe part of a multiverse
the multiverse in existence
it's actually quite humbling really.

OK that analogy is right....
but now scientists now believe that whatever we are seeing is some sort of RAM(random access memory) inside some other computer.
we are merely like those characters of games that at software level exists but actually they are a part of RAM.... or or we ourselves are RAM.

ants don't bother to understand, they don't have the capacity, all they do is act.
we humans, with our overgrown brains, have the need to understand, to satisfy our curiosity
