I'm with the other several answerers; go to a shelter.
Unless you plan on showing your cat, the necessity of a breed really isn't that big of a deal. (At least IMO)
There are so many cats in shelters who need loving new homes. There's also no doubt in my mind that you can find one who'll be the best companion you've ever had AND be hella cute too!
Some pet stores such as Petsmart work with shelters, so there's an option. But, I highly suggest your local Humane Society as a start because the animals are examined as well as fixed when adopted out.
C'mon, give a stray a chance. :D All 10 of mines (over many years) were awesome and cuter then heck!

The best kind of cat to get is one from your local shelter. You might not know what breed it is, it may not even be identifiable as any breed because it is so mixed, but that's not what's important. If you're looking for certain physical characteristics or personalities, I'm sure you can find a cat that you would be happy with at a shelter. The staff there will probably know a bit about the cat's temperament if you ask. A shelter cat can be just as good of a pet as one purchased from a breeder and you are saving their life, as well. (Also, it's cheaper to get one from a shelter, where you will have to pay a fee, but not as much as if you bought the cat from a breeder.)
Look at http://www.petfinder.com to find cats near you who need homes.

Go to an animal shelter and save a pet-animal shelters have many volunteers to help you decide which cat would be best for you-they are happy to answer any questions for you. And you would be saving a life, you wouldn't believe how many cats are homeless, I have 3 on my porch right now that I am trying to find homes for.

Don't "buy" a cat or dog when there are sooo... many puppies and kittens that need people to adopt them for little or nothing.
As far as a dog or cat goes a mix breed is known to be healthier and live longer...ask your VET.

I love animals. I tend to go for short hair cats due to the shed. I would not buy from a pet source, but go to an animal shelter and brouse the homeless cats. You can ofter interact and find one that is just right for you, and give an animal a good home where he is loved and cared for in a manner in which he/she deserves.

It depends on what you want, all cats are cute! You can get a mixed breed and be very happy. Check your local Pennysaver or pennysaver.com.

Pick out one that you know you can love and give a good home to for the rest of it's life, not by the breed.

Rag doll cats i think are the best, they are abit expensive (around AU $600) but they are just like a dog, the follow you, and are really placid, they are a long haired cat but they don't molt like normal cats.
