Yes you can. The site is: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/ but you will need to know in advance the update/knowledge base/patch number. So let Windows Update report available updates (it does not scan the machine) then go to the above website to obtain them.

If you are not keen on the Windows Update or it doesn't work then if you inspect 'Add or Remove Programs' in the 'Control Panel', tick 'Show Updates' (Windows XP and above), you will see what updates you already have. You can just download what is necessary.

There is also AutoPatcher http://www.autopatcher.com/ but I have not tried this so I cannot comment on it.

However if you subscribe to Windows XP magazine you get free updates as well as lots of tips and tricks. Oh and news with the Windows operating system. This would also come with updated drivers for your hardware and other software.

Be sure to check the relevant website for your harwdare and software on a regular basis. Some of them has a utility that does this for you.

Free updates of what? Of Windows XP?

If you do not have a legit XP, you can only download so far. Just click Tools in Internet Explorer then choose Windows Update.

You can also run Autopatcher.

http://www.autopatcher.com

although many installs still require validation that you have a genuine version of windows.

or, try linux.

or, try buying the software and use microsoft update/auto updates and save yourself the nightmare.

if you don't have the free Microsoft updates, your PC will most definitely not be secure.

So go and get 'em
