I think that's a question to think about -- tho' it should read " before Mt Everest was formed ?" -- because the Himalayas are 'fold' mountains , formed when the tectonic plate containing the Indian subcontinent broke off from where it was joined to Africa , floated NEwards , & rammed into the Asian plate . So , before that happened , which mountains were the highest on Earth ? ( Now , is that an answer , or another question ?)
