On social issues, Republicans are like introverts, they put themselves and their families above everyone else and don't think about how we have to work together as a society without it falling apart at some point... Democrats are like extroverts, caring about their own families, but also caring about other people, that might be why you always hear Republicans say things like "you feel too much for criminals" etc... There is probably some place in the middle that would work the best, you can't help everyone because not everyone wants to work, but you also can't force people to work for low wages like this administration does, just so some families can get richer... I might have voted for the old Ronald Reagan type of Republican, but this Nation has been way too far right for a lot of years... My opinion is that we need to let people see they can actually make something out of their lives if they work for it, and stop breaking apart our families, because the next thing to go is our nation... 8 million people in our prison justice system proves that we are out of time (it was 6.6 million about 5 years ago, I extrapolated)

Democrats think things through analyze what a situation is or could become study it from every angle and then seek advice from people even smarter than themselves and make a decision based on all the facts.
Republicans say will it sell in the bible belt? and can i get it on fox news in less than an hour? Period. that's it no real thought or study just as long as they figure it plays with the base it's okay no thought of consequences no concept of nuance.
For example Many Democrats are Baseball fans there are many aspects and subtleties to the game especially in the later innings when winning really becomes important.
Most Republicans like Nascar make for left hand turns really really fast and if you crash and your car burns up it's way cool. In fact winning isn't the main issues just a lot of beer and cool crashes.

The basic tenets or 'platforms' of each political party can be found by reading their political manifestos, written and agreed to upon by the respective political 'Committees' along with their leading political 'faces' who have to 'sell it' to the American people at voting time.

Nowadays we have offshoots of each party (Democrats have the liberals, or left-wingers and Republicans have the Conservatives) that work their influence into each party 'platform.'

Traditionally Democrats believe in a pacifist, more socialistic type state where the 'state' pays for everything, Welfare was a Democratic ideal instituted in 1965, in Lyndon Johnson's Great Society' message. So Democrats have always fought for more 'Social' type (free) programs. Where the money comes from to pay for these free handouts is what the Democrats also believe in and that is higher taxes. Especially the rich. They say that since we all should share this heavier burden so the less fortunate can avail themselves of the Democrats 'Great Society' higher taxes from the wealthy is where the money comes from. (Bush 41 has been the only Republican president to agree to a tax rise in the last 40 years)
Republicans have been identified with business concerns since the days of Calvin Coolidge who said, "The Business of America is Business" and since then have lowered taxes (raised when Democrats get into power), fiscal responsibility, less government, more personal responsibility, and being small business advocates are what the basic platform has stood for since Nixon, reinforced by Reagan.., and Now Bush 43. Lower taxes have proven (always) to improve the economy.

Offshoots: Democrats believe in abortion rights and are against the death penalty. That tells you that Democrats would rather kill a new baby and save the life of a murderer. Republicans are against abortion and for the death penalty. Republicans believe that new babies be given a chance to live and believe in killing murderers.

This is indeed a VERY basic list of each side since there are candidates who embrace the other parties ideals. They are known as 'losers' come primary day!

Ahhhh. . . a simple question. . .
When I was 5 or 6 years old, my Father became an American Citizen. . .the first thing he did was registrar to vote. He came ho to tell us what he had dome. "I registered as a Democrat" he stated. I asked him what that meant. He said that he was a democrat because he felt it was necessary to supp rt the working class. I ask why anyone had to do that, as why wouldn't everyone want to help the working class" He stated that the Republican party was for the Wealthy, big business, the people with the money. I was once again dumbfounded and could not comprehend how anyone would not be interested in helping those who were willing to work.. Well it did not take me long to figure it out. Those with the money, want to keep it and pay as little to the wage earner as they can . . . The wealthy want to keep the funds and make more by keeping the wages low and the working long hours. Aother form of slave labor. . . .

It depends. It used to be with Republicans it meant fiscal responsibility and smaller government, but that is no longer the case. Generally the parties are split along as follows as government spending and big government no longer differentiates the two:

Affirmative Action: D for, R against
Abortion: D for, R against
Lower Taxes: D against, R for
Homosexuals: D for, R against
Welfare: D for, R against
Minimum Wage Raise: D for, R against
Iraq War: D against, R for

this is a sore spot and it was best addressed by a psychologist in the Washington area as it was relayed to the Chicago paper a few months ago- read that the whole thing is so lop sided from the stand point of applied psychology that the professor hit nail after nail right in the head the facts that until the Dem's see they are shooting themselves in the foot through no exhibiting learned lock-step-methodologies of in fighting, it is so bad that it is non inflected intents that is surrounding the problems most can't get to a platform that has been given away before it has merit. great men can come from either party but how to get them there in one piece seems to be the billion dollar question in campaigning

Not really much. It is a feature of Democracy that as the democracy matures you will have either two parties or two giant coalition. You are not really left with any other option.
Democracy is thus like a cacus. Take for example Pepsi and Coke. Worldwide they just kill any small palyer and they always monopolise the market. They increase prices by themselves.
Hence no difference of thaught practically. Can you really tell Pepsi or Coke is better. No choice.
