what do i need to do to ensure that my US purchased laptop will work in australia, given the voltage and current differences?

You will need a plug adapter and a power converter otherwise you will damage you power pack and laptop.

Or the easier option is to buy a new power pack in Australia or buy one that works in Australia before you go (the compatible ones are cheaper than originals).

Not only are the plugs different, but the main's current is also different.

In the US, the current running in the mains is approx 100-127v/60hz.
In Australia, the current running in the mains is approx 220-240v/50hz.

Either buy a AC adapter from the manufacturer for that laptop or get an adapter from an electronics store.
