I am a professinal song writer. I have been writing on a professional level for about 12 years now. When I first started to write; I thought I had to be in some mood to write such as sad or glad, or whatever, but the truth of the matter is; my best work has came out of nowhere, and within 15 minutes, the song was done from start to finish. Sometimes when I try to write, I don't have anything to write, and stare at blank paper. I carry a note pad with me when I am driving, and I will write a song while driving down the road. I would say that love is the biggest inspiration to writing. You can always write something about love or relationships. I do rock music in the reverse order. I find some really hot licks on my guitar, and search from there for my melody lines. From this I will take the music, and write my lyrics to the music. You must have a subject to write about, and a hook line to form the song around. I would suggest to anyone who wishes to become a good writer/poet, to buy a few books on writing to learn the shape, and form of song/poems. Length is critical in songs as you cannot go over the 4 minute limit if you ever want to hear it on the radio. With radio time is money, and because of advertisments the amount of space a song takes up determines wheather or not your song will get played. Many things to know! Something to write about, is what inspires me. With rock you are going after a younger audience, and you must write about things that make a statement, and can be somewhat rebelious in nature. You want to go against the grain almost to the point of shocking, in order to have a hit. It's either that, or go after the most common, and that is love. I hope I have been some help to you. Good Luck!!!
