What is the English identity? Is it the same as it was a generation ago? A century ago? Surely a nation's character is in a continual state of flux and evolution? I don't think there is anything to worry about, this is business as usual for a healthy country.

Invasions of countries have been taking place for centuries now and that is why the people in England have different colourings. There isn't a country in the world that has not felt the influx of foreigners and no country today remains the same as it was even just 20 years or so ago. We were a Christian country a few years ago but are now losing out to Islam which , I believe ' is now the second religion of England. I dont think you are going to be able to keep the English identity much longer. I sometimes cringe inside when I hear an obvious foreign looking person state "I am English"....I think...."NO! you are not English but may be British" and No I am not racist because I, myself, am Maltese and have lived here for years. I hold a British passport but never say I am English because of the fact that I have black hair, brown eyes and an olive skin and an English person doesn't look the same. In time all countries will be so completely mixed up that no one country will be able to truly identify with its origins except perhaps the African countries and parts of Asia where no one particular wants to live in. I think the effect of all this migration in Europe is massive and England, besides other European countries will not remain at all the same. Pity but there it is.

Well the influence of the English on Celtic cultures and language over the years did enough damage to prove as an example of how 1 single nationality can change anothers national identity.
However, the people who consider themselves 'True English' (that is people who are white and Christian and feel negatively about varied religions and cultures) should probably consider that this change has already happened and embrace Englands new diversity!!!
(How would one define English Identity in the 1st place? I'm not sure what it consists of)

I agree with Paul G.
The Maltese lady who said that English people are fair skinned, fair haired and Christian is not right.
My son-in-law is every bit English, hates going abroad, a university graduate, speaks much 'posher' that me and was born and bred in Surrey. To look at him you would think he was Chinese - which is indeed is what his parents are. He goes to the Buddist temple and celebrates Christmas with more enthusiasm than most, (and will go to church if anyone else will go with him.) He indeed is English and loves England with no wish to live anywhere else.
We English have red hair, black hair, fair hair, sometimes green hair - white skin, black skin, brown skin and yellow skin. You are only English if you really love to be English and hold a British passport.

It's only a problem because these people insist on bringing their cultures with them and not adoopting the English culture. The government is terrified of being accused of racism so don't do anything
