Yet, there are so many things that tempt us. Yes, the things that tempt us can take a hold of our souls. Even we, skeptical religious liberals, can be seduced, demeaned, or become lost in the maze. This is Halloween Sunday, our Annual Pumpkin Parade Sunday. This is the time of year, when we playfully engage mortality, darkness, evil and even the Devil. This playful engagement is silly, fun, playful, and it invites engagement, provides a kind of collective safety valve, and allows for consideration and potential integration of our own darkness, our own shadow selves, as some would say.

In the 20th Century UUs have generally did not acknowledged the place of evil, sin or the collective evil sometimes called the Devil. We have not thought much about sin and evil or had a particularly well developed anthropology or theodicy. As Martin Luther King Jr. looked to Unitarian Universalism as a potential religious home, he turned instead to his Baptist roots. He did so in part, because he saw that our positivism did not allow enough for human failure.

We all fail. We are all frail. We do the very thing we hope not to do, too often. We are all in process, partial and fragile. This is both a blessing and a curse. We are too often seduced by the Devil, I say.

If you know of someone that has sold their soul to the devil then I would discontinue knowing them immediately.
