You need to define "usefulness" in terms of
1) to whom the subject is useful
2) in what way usefulness should be considered, (eg. direct or indirect; utilitarian or enhancing)
Generally, however, I find Philosophy to be highly limited in its direct utilitarian value. Very few people appreciate or value its benefits.

It's mainly mental gymnastics. Out of all the philosophy that I studied in college, maybe one percent stuck with me and influenced my perspective on life. The rest of my perspective comes from living.

Philosophy is the fire in the refining process of thought. Without it nothing changes, nothing becomes clear.
Philosophy is the heat and energy that when applied to ideas and thought that separates the silver from the dross, the good from the bad.

Opinions vary. It is useful in placing a point of view. It is useful in thinking and sharing a viewpoint so others can learn from the different perspectives on topics. It is only useful of someone else listens, reads or agrees.

Though there are many definitions as to what philosophy is or is not, mine is simple. It is an intellectual discussion of man without the involvement of religion, faith, science, or any empirical relationship. It is a discussion of ideas. Just as the greater the mind, the greater the need for games, so it is that the greater the mind, the greater the need to discuss ideas. It is through this discussion that we gain insight of ourselves and of those around us.

We human beings live and work in the world of rationality, that is, rational practice related to philosophy should support us to reach our legitimate and better goal. In other words, decent people do something towards their ideals with practical reasons as guided by those who know before us or by our great contemporaries from any country who are willing to help.
