Ahhh, I had to make this choice many years ago. I was a member of the church for most of my life, went to Sunday school for years and NEVER missed a Sunday in church.

My preacher/minister also had to do basic counselling and Pyschology 1/2 at uni, so I felt pretty safe in going to him. Well, he followed the church official position, and TREATED me for homosexuality.

After years of pain, depression etc. I eventually went to a psychologist. Though the psychologist was also a committed christian, he could tell me that I can not be CURED.

B very carefull not to ask your preacher to do what he is not qualified to do.

That question also depends on your state of mind, and whether or not you are open to the possibility that while a religious person will hold your confidence, a professional counselor can and/or will inform the proper authorities and/or medical staff if they think your problems are a danger to your well being or the well being of other people. I have been a non-denominational spiritual counselor for over 5 years, and while I have never dealt with anyone truly harmful, I have had to talk some people out of difficult situations. So it's really a matter of preference.

Depends. For the most in- depth stuff, you need a trained professional counselor, I found the best of both worlds in a Christian counselor.Preacher is helpful for first-aid type stuff & to help you through an effective depression (ie, death of a loved one, etc), but if you have a scarred past or PTSD, clinical depression, etc, sooner or later you'll want the professional help as well. Prayer & best wishes to your healing process.

I'd rather go to a professional counselor.....tho I fully appreciate there are a lot of people who find better help by talking to their preacher.

My belief is that there's no better help than Faith,
so I'd lean toward going to a Preacher.

Counselor

Depending on the nature of the problem, either is acceptable. For example, if it is drug or alcholol related than a secular counseling service would be preferred.
If you are having a problem with child pornography be sure to ask your local Priest.
