Go to the Uswitch site, this will tell you the best gas, electric and dual energy suppliers

I think it also depends on your postcode - the same supplier would be cheaper here then there etc. Then there rates vary according to how much you use, some will give a discount for the first x amount of units, others will charge less once you reach x amount etc that is why Uswitch is there. I found Powergen horrendous for us but they suit the couple above. I think N-Power is good but they do not take meter readings (they estimate) but you can call them up with one.
Also, the price of energy is already coming down in the markets and though it will take up to a year for the prices to come down for us end users, it will so do not get collared into fixed price deals as now it can go both ways!

Difficult one really, each of the top six all seem to have a poor track record until you look at Southern Electric, so they might be worth considering.

A supplier who supplies on Southern's licence is Ebico who normally turn out to be really cheap for a lot of people....not a lot of people have heard of them, nor are they widely advertised. Do a search for their website.

If it helps, I would Avoid: npower, British Gas, Scottish Power, Powergen, & EDF altogether, they all have their problems.

If you are solely looking at price and don't care about customer service then by all means go with one of the top six suppliers - use a price comparison service to compare deals in your area - remember that electricity tariffs vary according to where you live, gas prices are static across the country. - One person's cheap deal might be your most expensive option.

Addition: EDF do supply all area's in the UK. If they have a licence, they can supply in all areas of the UK, its not restricted. Don't be led astray by people trying to tell you that certain companies don't supply in your area. Fact is if they don't, then they aren't a licenced supplier.

Additional Addition: Fixed or Capped rate deals are tricky - you'll typically pay a premium on top of their normal rates for the privilege of the price not going above a certain increase/price. These are tricky because most do not have a clause that tells you what happens if the price falls i.e. they remain at the same price and you have to remember to .... get out of your contract quick! Basically, Fixed and Capped rates aren't highly prized in my experience - stick with the standard products, paying by DD and for further discounts take Internet accounts.
