I have no way to project salaries or fees for a creative writer, but you can make an income doing this.

If you want to study creative writing I would recommend you learn to write for both printed and electronic media. You can be a copywriter for broadcast--television or radio--and would likely work either as a contractor or an employee of an advertising agency, or you could work for the station itself.

Print media usually centers around newspapers, and they come in all sizes and salary ranges. It's best to start small and work up. Good writers for print can find their way to large newspapers, wire services or to magazines. Again, it's best to be highly qualified and to be prepared to operate as an independent contractor for an ad agency or other customer.

If all else fails it never hurts to be a good writer. You can find a lot of related careers that make use of writing skills. You could become a teacher or instructor at any number of levels.

Don't expect the world to beat a path to your door until you have gotten published and have become famous. Most writers--even good ones--don't reach that level until late in life if they get there at all.

It's a wonderful skill and a great area of study. Not necessarily a gold mine, but it does give you lots of career paths.
