Techincally it is always a choice, and whoever gets elected really does change how things in the US go, look at the differences between the Clinton and Bush (both of them) administrations. While everyone think there is just a two party system, in reality there are a handful of other parties, the others just don'thave the money to spend like water.

The other thing is primaries. This is the level where those who are unfavored are weeded out and also the beginning of the election system fraught with choices.

Although I suppose you could get cynical and choose to believe that corporations actually control everything behind the scenes. But honestly, if that were true then it would stand to reason that all electoral systems are run by those same corporations and no election is really a choice. Just on step away from predestination :).

P.S. the US has never actually been a democracy, as much as we like to say it is. We actually elect representatives to represent us in our government, so we are a republic. To be a true democracy every one of us would have to be present at state and federal buildings every day to argue and vote on decisions.

Of course it is an illusion. Choosing every four years from a wide field of TWO candidates is not a choice of the best. It is the choice of the lesser of two evil. The parties here in the U.S. are financed by companies. These companies want to receive a return in their "investment" the company that pays the candidate the most, receives the most after that candidate is elected. Halliburton for example got their investment returned many fold over, since their employees, Bush and Cheney, delivered on their promise to start wars in Iraw and Afghanistan.

Democracy has seized to exist in the U.S.

The majority of American`s are literally clueless. This is not to be mistaken for a lack of intelligence, that would be untrue. we are being fed a kind of "Disney" version of how the world is, and as we all know the "disney " interpretation of historical events could`nt be further from the truth.
I would go as far as to suggest that come the next election NO American should vote, period. Then we could see something really interesting happen.

the sad thing is that i dont believe we do, everyone has always been ok with just having 2 cantidates, but honestly what am i supposed to do? i dont want to vote republican bc i dont like war or believe in god/conservative beliefs, and im not going to vote for a democrat bc they could care less about the country they just want to spend money and make it look like theyre doing something...so honestly ive been kinda screwed lately, last election i wrote in ross perot...and i think im gonna do the same this year, or maybe to make it more of a moccary i might write in christopher walken...bc at least its my choice then, not a pre-determined member of a pre-existing party...
