I am not connected to xbox live yet but as i play on my xbox 360 late at night when the missus and my daughter have gone to bed i really need to get some earphones. if i get a xbox headset will i be able to use it as "ordinary" earphones until i eventually sign up to live? if not, is there an adaptor avaliable that will enable me to connect a set of earphnoes to the 360 controller?

Not totally sure about your question, but here goes. The xbox 360 headset has the plug placed right next to a cap that snuggles right up with the controller, making it impossible to plug the headset into any other device (like an iPod).

You can use the headset basically as "headphones" for your xbox, however, by setting the "output to xbox communicator only".

The sound quality is not great, so if you really want sound I'd suggest plain-old wireless headphones, with the receiver plugged into the headphone jack of the TV.
