phone dilemma?

my 12 year old daughter wants a mobile phone for crimbo, she wants one that her friends have not got approx £300 ,any ideas

To ensure the phone can last a year (at least) without being stated outdated, I would go with the Motorola KRZR K1 or K1m. Just released, stylish looks, all the needed functionality.
Alternatively, the Motorola V3x.
If you plan to do the one-off Christmas gift, the Sony Ericsson W850i would be good too. Music and mobile in one. I would also recomment the W950i (a little more expensive), with the looks of an iPod, but added functionality of a mobile. No camera on the W950i.

For £300?? There's a new Motorola out that most people don't have yet, it's the K1 KRZR, very slim 2mp camera, very stylish. It's a reflective blue colour, very nice. Prob get one sim-free for around £300 from Phones 4 U, Carphone etc. Or get the White Sony Ericsson w810i. Best way to get phone sthat no one else has is on contract, you'll get pretty much any new phone.

£300 for something thats going to be out of date in 6 months? Come on there must be cheaper options.

Personally, I wouldn't spend the extra just to get a few months ahead of my mates - typically I'd spend about £100 every two or three years on a mobile.

For £300 I'd expect it to be diamond encrusted and personally put together by Gucci.

You seem to be having a lot of money to throw around. And you like to pamper your daughter, who is not even a teen. Sorry, can't advise you on such extravaganza, but strongly suggest that you talk your daughter out of it and teach her how to live sensibly and most important, rather than spendins, teach her how to save - this is the right age for your daughter to learn how to save (if her parents believe in it!)

a motorola v3x (not v3i, V3X)
a nokia 6822 (i'm sure she could like this one, it's opens up to show a keyboard but is like every other mobile when closed)

buy her a motorola red phone.. trendy and only £90.. please dont waste £300 on a phone which will be stolen, dropped lost etc..
