I am currently deployed so I can help answer that.
DVD's if they have a portable player
video games if they have a hand held to play them with
Vogue magazine to look at the women, it is no longer allowed to have playboy and such.
Letters, lots and lots of letters
Photos, no nude ones cause they are prohibited and will be taken away, you wouldn't want someone else looking at your naked body?
COOKIES!!!! Before my unit left, my wife would bake 4 baches of cookies once a week and bring them in to my office for all of us, so I can't waite for her to send them to us.
Cards are great. When I was training my wife would send the goofiest cards she could find, so that I could have something to laugh at.
Deoderant, razers, the regular necessities so that we don't have to spend the money here. Plus it makes us feel like you can still take care of us. When my wife does that, it's like a little bit of home with us while we're away.
Sentimental things we couldn't bring in the first place due to lack of room. My wife is going to send me a shirt that has my dad's unit from when he was a fighter pilot in the AF. We have these stuffed animal kissing frogs. When we are apart, I keep the girl and she keeps the boy so that when we are together, our kissing frogs can be together to.
I hope I could help as best I can.

Photo album scrap books
(Keep copies for yourself cuz he might lose his)
- kind of a running diary of the latest family events in pictures.

Sudoku is becoming popular - a book of those puzzles is fun.

If you live "on the economy" (not on post) - collect notes from neighbors that he's familiar with and likes.

Small pictures that he can focus on and think of home...this might sound silly, but I had a picture of the grill and my favorite chair with "a cold beer waiting" for me that I loved looking at.

A "how to" book or "Dummies" book of his latest interest.

A John Kerry Dart board.

Halloween candy

For Christmas - Video of family Christmas with sound!!!

want more ideas - write me I will find out whats currently the most popular thing going. I'm an education counselor serving soldiers in Iraq - .

a portable dvd player and some dvd movies, with a plug in for vehicles...a wave music player....an xm radio but that would have to be a subscription....some good barbeque sauce for the goat meat, to help hide the flavor.

I think an IPOD or XBOX will do.. My husband was working in Iraq before, he said he used to play XBOX all the time. You can download games in IPOD.

This is what I have sent my fiance who is an US Marine that was serving in Iraq.

Christmas:
Cuddly teady bear. (Reminds him of home and me).
Home made chocolate covered pretzels with green, blue and red sprinkle designs.
Home made chocolate browny fudge.
A long letter that he loves to recieve.
Playdough and a sketcher to draw (inside joke). He drew on the sketcher and placed one of the drawings on a slide video cd he made me for valentines with our song, pictures of him and in action, and a special message to me. etc.

Valentines day:
I did a photo shoot. Sexiness with class (as military branches don't allow nude or semi-nude material. At the same time, I wanted to have class, not pin up girl type and leave for "imagination")
A long letter that he loves to get.

He got to come home for valentines day to the 1st of March since his dad passed away. Long story short, he tried to come home but red cross couldn't give information to command as his dad's doctor would not give information that his dad was dying nor verify he was in hospital (doctor is a big jerk).

so, as my fiance birthday was march 4th and he had to go back to iraq a few days before, I took him out and we spent a lot of time together having some fun.

July 4th came our annivers and we bought a brand new truck together. (He was still in Iraq when it was bought July 3rd)

He came home in August of this year from Japan (packing to come home). To make up for his birthday, I took him to magic mountain. To make up for my birthday (september as he had to go to 29 palms for training) he took me sky diving (which was a present to him too).

He goes to Iraq again at the end of March. He loves his home made fudge I make and loves the video's, pictures and most of all, the support knowing when he comes home this time, we are getting married. Something to really look forward to.

He says a lot of guys love to get sweets and card/board games along with letters from home. I never realized how many military men don't recieve any sort of contact or don't have any family to be contacted with.

It is really hard to send things in the mail like Xbox's and expensive things like that. Why? Because it gets beaten around, opened and stolen. A few items never made it to my fiance I sent in the box.

My step sister and her fiance (Army) with their two kids (expecting third now) live in Germany. We sent DVDs for the girls and a home made video from home from family. They were stolen a long with a few of the kid's toys. She says it is common, especially around christmas for them to still these things. Especially since they are 2 to 3 times more expensive to buy in Germany than US.

I recommend to place insurrence on the box being sent AND to be specific on what sending. If sending a lot, divide in small amounts in multi box's than just place in just one box.
