If they fail to show up for breakfast more than a few days in a row, it may be an idea to walk around the house and see if they are lying somewhere.

Also, if you move into a new house, and there are bones lying around in various rooms, it is a fair chance that someone has died (at some stage)...

Unless there are obviously ghosts running amuck in your house its pretty difficult to find out. i once lived in a house where we would hear a music box playing sometimes. One day I heard it and my girlfirend and I went upstairs to check it out. She tripped on the stairs with a glass in her hand and landed on the glass which smashed and then went back together. Then something picked her up and set her down so she was sitting on the stairs. Later that evening a portrait hanging on teh wall changed into teh face of a little girl. It told us that she had been playing with a music box in the closet at the top of the stairs. She heard someone coming up the stairs so she stuck her head out of the closet and someone shot her. She just wanted to find her musicbox. We asked the landlord about it and he said it was true and told us when and the girl's name. That name and the year she died were carved into a wall in the basement.
Unless it was a really tragic gory incident you likely won't be able to find out. Many people have died at home peacefully and their spirits are not haunting anyone.

You open the door and see someone sprawled at the living room with a knife stuck to its chest and it doesn't move when you tickle it.

That's how.
