There is a smell coming up from the drain in our kitchen, we have tried drano, bleach, nothing works. In a matter of days the smell returns, it is similar to the smell of mould growing in a moist area. There are no water leaks

HERES YOUR EASY SOLUTION.......
I 'DID' have the exact same problem in my house which started in the kitchen but eventually the smell was omitting from ALL inside drains (bathroom , laundry tub, kitchen sink)..I WAS TOLD BY 'PROFESSIONALS' THAT I HAD A BLOCKAGE IN THE SEWER !!! or A LEAK IN THE PLUMBING somewhere... WRONG !!! NO BLOCKAGE, NO LEAKS...
THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE & INEXPENSIVE ...and...IT WORKS :)... well it certainly has for me...

EVERYDAY for 1-2 weeks simply boil your kettle, get a STURDY measuring jug, put 3-4 capfulls of your household DISENFECTANT/DOMESTOS in the jug & fill the jug with BOILING water...it MUST be boiling hot-BE CAREFUL, then slowly pour that down your drain/s (1 JUG FULL PER DRAIN(500ml will do)& its best to do ALL of them even if they dont smell...yet) EVERYDAY for 2wks & you WILL notice the smell decreases after 2-3days then stops within the 1st wk...BUT YOU GOTTA KEEP DOING IT FOR the whole 2WKS ..The problem is apparently SOMETIMES caused by the 'TRAP' underneath NOT being DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH THE DRAIN PIPE or JUNCTION & instead being slightly off its correct position. This method successfully flushes out the 'TRAP' unlike everyday hot &/or cold 'tap water' when draining away.
I'm told you'll probably NEVER be rid the smell for good & that it WILL need to be repeated as the odour DOES return from time to time after everyday use...but this method WORKED FOR ME, ITS EASY & IT'S CHEAP.....In my town the older buildings (& some new) are prone to this problem & NOTHING else rids the smell (even if it's only temporary)..so remember: BOILING WATER & DISENFECTANT (dont burn yourself) EVERYDAY for 2 weeks...seems to last up to 5/6wks depending on the 'trap' & general household usage...THE RE-DOSE should only need to be applied down the drain/s for 1wk from here on instead of 2wks
GOOD LUCK - hope it works for you too :)

I would be curious to know why he "blew the pipes out". if there was a clog, there still my be some debris of sorts in the trap of the sink drain pipe. Removing that, cleaning it out and re-installing it so it is clear and free-flowing might help. If there were guck from other areas of the pipe, you might need to put in some baking soda on a regualr basis for a few days. Try three times a day for three days. If you can get a bottle brush down the drain hole, try cleaning that as thoroughly as you can. if you remove the trap to check it for cleanliness, you can scrub the sink/drain pipe at that time. Those three things should eliminate any strange smells. -Oh, and one other thing. Make sure with a visual check under the sink that nothing got "blown out" of the pipes into the cabinet. Mike

Through some baking soda in the drain.Maybe there is somethng clining to the inside of the drain. You can try an Alka Zelter tablet to put in the drain. It will clean out the gunk. Then follow it with lemon juice.

Try vinegar or lemon juice to loosen up the food or mold that is caught in the drain. Then flush with hot water. Hope this helps. :)
