lol just kidding
The core 2 duo, is, as it says, two cores.
It isn't two processors, but two cores, inside one processor, sharing FSB, clockspeeds, etc.
The P4 with HT is a great processor. While a 3.2 GHZ may be slightly lacking when compared to some of the better Core 2 Duos, and definately the Core 2 Extreme, the higher speed P4's can definately do equal, if not better than some of the Core 2 Duo chips.
If I am correct, however, the Core 2 Duo chips run much cooler, which means that we will eventually get faster cores in them.
I however, do not like where Intel is going, witht he Core Quattro, as it has been proven that in 90% of applications, there is absolutely no difference in performance between Core 2 Duo and Core Quattro. I wish they would just up the core speed in the Core 2 Duos.

Every processor is unique and has it's own place in history. You could say the 3.2 P4 could be the Pentium 200 MMX of 2005, since processors evolve so fast, you might be missing the point of the dual core processor. Intel will rely on packing more horsepower onto a single chip. The dual core is like having two processors in one chip. Multiprocessing is nothing new, it was used to power servers for business enterprises.
Indeed, Hyperthreading helps. When the time comes, you can safely and conveniently upgrade your CPU to a dual core chip if your motherboard's socket 775 supports it.

The Pentium 4 is inefficient in comparison to the Core 2 Duo. It puts out more heat, takes up more power and still doesn't go as fast as a Core 2 Duo.
Raw GHz means almost nothing anymore when referring to cross-architecture chips.
Also, it's probably not your processor that's lagging in the games; it's more likely your graphics card. Or perhaps you don't have enough RAM.
You really must try a Core 2 Duo to see the difference ;).

If you look the core processors they still have a 3.6ghz speed for each chip. The same speed the P4 had. The reason they are leaving the single core processors is simple. They give developers the chance to code software to take advantage of threading two CPUs thus speeding up the process. This is alot better then trying to cram more transistors in a chip that produces too much heat.

It's called Moore's Law. That processor speeds will double every 12 to 18 months. It about chip evolution and faster computers building faster computers. It because we want to do more than one thing at a time well. It's because the incredible explosion of data created by new storage devices and Digital cameras that have ever increasing picture size. It's the future. It's here now, keep up or be left behind! Good luck!

Just remember one thing, as soon as you buy your new computer, it is outdated already!!
Heck our main computer was the best and biggest they had on the market, at that time, 2 or so years ago . Now it is olddddddd
"You really must try a Core 2 Duo to see the difference ;)" Then I would have to buy it LMAO!!.

because the computer industry changes so fast nowadays ..that something newer and faster is developed every 6 months now....in six more months something newer and better and faster will come out...look how far we've come in 20 yrs or so...i can still remember using a TRS-80..everything had to be typed in and we used those big 51/2 in floppy disk and everything was done through DOS...lololol....

in a number of years to come all this duo core technology will be dinosaur like...electron switches will make that possible...as far as what's out there now...a duo core p4i w/ 64kb output is still a nipple twister for me...but not for my wallet unfortunately..
