A plumber once recommended using swimming pool chlorine to help with the slow drain. He said it breaks up the hair and soap scum. Do you know if this will damage my pipes? They are the old metal kind, not plastic.

No bleach will not hurt the pipes, but I find that Liquid drano industrial strenght, if useed properly (i.e. letting it sit befor ewashing it away) really eats away anything tha is clogging it

Try bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and vinegar. Pour the baking soda into the drain, then add vinegar. It will bubble up. Add a little more vinegar, then rinse. You may need to repeat, but it usually works great with no risk of damage to pipes or the environment

Put an Alks Zelter tablet down the drain. First remove the cover off.

Any fumes will quickly disipate once you turn the shower on and all the bleach is washed down the drain. You would not have to wait at all. No reason to be nervous about a little bleach.

no chlorine will not do anything to the pipes. I will use the baking soda and vinegar but make the pressure help not the bubbles. I'm not sure what the pluming drainers(Draino) will do to your pipes. the vinegar thing will not make the water fly down but it might make it faster.

If store bought clog remover (use slow acting) doesn't work you need a snake. They aren't expensive at any hardware store.
