Most of my family agree that he only told the truth, and I don't know about where you live, but here, I know people who are poor and can't get a good education due to lack of money and are in Iraq.
I rarely hear about medical students or lawyers going to Iraq.

We currently have a totally volunteer military. It's comprised of people from all walks of life. While it's true that many join to obtain the G I benefit for education, there are thousands who have excelled in private life. I worked at a law firm that had two partners who were active members of the reserve, both colonels. These men were "the best and brightest". Our military won't accept the failures of the world. If you have a felony conviction, if you didn't obtain your high school education you are not able to join.
I have served on job search committees and I say from experience that having served in the military will get you hired much faster than having a 4.0 GPA. It speaks to character and experience.
I don't know the people that your family has met but the Vets that I have known are good people who have flourished in society.

Yes I do think Kerry spoke the truth. Education is really expensive. I live in Canada and the same is true up here. Who wants to work for $8-12 per hour? Most people that join do so to get out of poor areas, or for some help with education. In Canada we have a military university. People will attend this university to get their educations paid for, but they have to serve in the military. I don't see no Lawyers joining the military.
I was watching CNN and they were talking about Kerry's comments. Glen Beck was talking about how stupid Kerry's remarks were. Glen Beck then said exactly what Kerry was saying. Most people that join the military don't have university or college degrees. The rate of educated people in the military has actually dropped.
Kerry is right. Glen Beck is wrong. George Bush is disillusioned.

He made what many accept as the truth .9 out of 10 families do not have the money to pay for a college education .
So many young people are approached by the military in an effort to trade a few years service for some college money .
Seeing as how 35% of all jobs are in the government it is good to become involved with them early on .
Pays the bills and allows you to enjoy a relatively stress free life .
The government is the best employer around .A garbage man or janitor for the state has many benefits other working people do not have .Like after 10 years you have retirement after 20 you are getting 80% of you pay plus cost of living and medical coverage for life .
The government offers great benefits to the people it likes to hire .
Those people who have learned to read and write and follow instructions without thinking at all .
A manual comes with every position in the government describing the duties you are to perform and how long you can take to do it .
You can stand around and wait 7 hours at the driver's lic. place and in the last hour they take 60 pictures and process everyone out .
A line has to be around all the time to keep up appearances .If you worked at it hard they could close several offices . That's not how government operates . maximum inefficiency is how it is designed to function .

todays us military is on of the most highly educated forces in the world.most have at least some college.todays military is hitech and it takes a smart person to operate.i was in from 89-93 and the improvments since then are amazing.99% of special forces operators have a college degree and most have a masters.and these guys major in psychology, polysci, computer engineering and such.all members of the military get to take college courses while on duty anywhere in the world. and yes there are medical students and law students in iraq.there are a lot of doctors serving there as well as jag officers serving in country.
study something before you prattle on about something.your family must all be liberal arts majors who look down on people with real degrees.btw kerry is an idiot who either blew his script or really meant what he said.there is a memorial honoring him in ho chi minh city as a war hero for vietnam.
also i didnt compleate college but became a firefighter/emt instead and i beg you to call me uneducated

IN the national guard those types of people go to Iraq all the time... they hold civilian jobs and serve their country ( best of both worlds )
Also the people you speak of have the option to get training in alot of different fields when they return from their tours, not to mention the doors military training will open in public service jobs..
Maybe Kerry spoke the truth as he sees it... guess you cant fix stupid.

I believe he did. He did not mean they were stupid- but simply- what other options do these young adults have? If they join the army their college will be paid. Now a days you have to have a college education- there are not a lot of options if you dont have a degree anymore. If they join the Army they will get decent pay (more than minimum wage which is basically what they will be getting if they do not have a degree) and also health benefits. WHAT other options do they have?

He did tell the truth. Many people can't handle the truth, and that is why they found the message so offensive.
