I'm one of those obsessed fans who spends all day tracking some sport in some manner. I think there are a lot of answers to this question. But I feel that one of the best arguments are that it's traditional. We pass things on from generation to generation. I live in Massachusetts, and one of the first things I bought my son was a red sox outfit! When I was growing up, I watched my father and wanted to be like him in every way, and he was into sports as well. One of the first toys I had as a child were baseball cards, and I looked up their value religously. I think another argument could be the entertaining value. Men tend to like fast action and quick information, men are also competitive in nature. I personally can't compete with these players, although deep down I think I can for some reason, so, I root for a team instead. Sometimes I latch onto certain players who have a style like me, and it's comforting thinking that it could be me out there on the field, and I hope for that player to do well. Watching football on sunday is the ultimate feel good experience. There's nothing more exciting than a last minute touchdown or field goal, it could even be better than sex. It's comforting, traditional, exciting, cheerleaders, food, and BEER! I could keep going....

I agree that "us men" tend to be more entertained with "real life" rather than fiction, i.e. soap operas or romance novels. But that can also be easily rebuttled with both sexes infatuation with reality TV shows.
I believe sports are a man's way of living vicariously (sp?) through the team / player he's rooting for. Football, in particular, symbolizes "War". Two teams (Armies) trying to battle for territory and eventually invade the opponents base (Endzone). Soccer & Rugby have the same concept. Basketball too, however the scoring is too often to consider it a battle in the middle of the playing field.

Lets go with the opposite, that's like us saying why are women so obsessed with watching Oprah? My gf watches her every day, and I think it's a really boring show.
Guys like football (and other sports) because we are competitive in nature. To guys, everything is a competition. So naturally we like sports. It's really that simple.

I'm a chick and I'm obsessed with football. It's such an exciting sport. It's more than a pastime, it's almost like a religion. Maybe if you understood it and watched it with your boyfriend, you would like it too. Just a thought.

Men like sports. Men like contact sports.
Men like competition of best players against best player team sports.
Men like confrontation and wining.

They are kind of like soap operas for men. They are competitive and have a lot of action and sometimes drama.
I guess I could ask why women like tabloids and soap operas, but I really don't want to know.
