You will see that the pieces are the same in both triangles. Why is there an empty space?

That’s because the slope of the triangle with legs 2 and 5 is different from the slope with legs 7 and 3. Therefore, the “triangle” isn’t a real triangle. It just looks like one.
The triangles are supposed to look like a 5 by 12 triangle. But the actual area sum of the parts is only 29.5 compared to 30.

The difference is caused by the slopes of the two triangles on top. They aren't the same. In one case it creates a concave edge (bending inward) and in the other case it creates a convex edge (bending outward). The difference between the two comes out to 1 square unit, which explains the "missing square".

The yellow triangle in the bottom one is one block smaller length wise.
