The chance that you will get infected is low. It's possible, but only if you don't follow lab procedure and safety measures. Usually you work with relatively benign organisms...or at least ones that aren't airborne. I was working with some E. coli a couple weeks ago. Anywho, is this for college? It's just a science course...so as long as you can follow what's being taught, then you should be fine. Microbiology isn't too hard, at least in my opinion, but hey, I'm a zoology major.

It depends on what level of microbiology course you are taking. The first thing they teach you in an introductory microbiology course is how to protect yourself from getting infection and how to handle microorganisms. You will have to wear a lab apron and wash it after each use. Hand washing and cleaning of your table before and after each lab, using disposable gloves, appropriate disposal of microbial and hazardous waste, will all help protect you from getting an infection.
I had microbiology last semester and I enjoyed it so much that I am seriously thinking of a career in microbiology. I followed all the safety instructions and never got sick.
