Try a professional carpet cleaner maybe? That may help any trapped odors. For a quick solution...which doesn't last, but for the time being smells great.. Febreze Air Effects. Not the original Febreze..but the new spray bottle called Air Effects. Those scents (I use the purple bottle) smell soo good, much better than anything else. Although thats not a permanent solution...if the smell makes you sick, or if company is coming over.. Febreze Air Effects are great.

Sounds like mildew/mold. First place I'd check... under the fridge. We JUST found out that for months there was a pin-hole sized leak in the line to the ice maker. Couldn't figure out what the heck the smell was and thought it was the animals. I took pictures of what I found back there it was so nasty. So, look there first.

Then check around your sinks and toilets to be sure that there are no leaks in any pipes or tanks. If you can't see any, throw a paper towel under them and the next day, see if they're still dry.

Check by your tubs and showers also. If you have access panels to see the pipes in your tub and shower, check there too. Water can leak into your walls and it's a haven for mold if so.

Other than that... change your air filter in your furnace, make sure all your garbage is taken out, and good luck!

(Oh... for the smell... vinegar helps a LOT, but you have to be able to handle the smell of vinegar. :) I boiled a pot with 1:3 vinegar/water. If that doesn't work, you can do full strength. You can also put it in a spray bottle and mist. Non home remedy - get a can of Oust and an oust fan. That stuff works miracles.)

Is your house built on a pier or slab foundation? If it's a pier, there could be something under the house making it smell.

Have you:

Steam cleaned the carpets with an OxyClean type solution?

Taken down and washed all the window coverings?

Cleaned all the upholstered furniture?

Vaccumed the walls/baseboards?

Opened up the windows for a day to air out the house?

Checked the fridge for culprits? The freezer? The pantry?

Looked for mold/mildew anywhere there might be water build up? (evap coolers, sinks, tubs, any drains...even in the walls where pipes are or the ceiling where leaks have occured)

It could be mold or mildew. I have found that after a time every day cooking odors go through the house and make everything smell bad. Try washing any and everything. Walls collect and retains odors too. I use a solution that my husband and I swear by. Mix 1 cup washing soda (not baking soda. Although you could probably use baking soda), 1 cup white vinegar, 1cup ammonia to 1 gallon water. You can wash just about everything like blinds, walls, tiles, etc.

You can also try bringing about 1/2 cup of white vinegar to a boil. I couldn't believe it the first time I tried it but it really works at removing odors. I cooked some crabs and the kitchen reeked. I boiled some vinegar and you'd never know I had cooked anything.

your house is hunted or there is a dead body under the floor boards that could be what ssstttiiinnnkkkkkssssss. people hide them down there these days. maybe you should check. i can smell your house all the way over here. try moveing or burn some insence, or start chain smokeing in your house to cover up the smell of that dead body. i think that is what it is. well good luck with that and i hope the best for you.

Probably mold or did someone live there before you had a pet. Pet smells are awful to get rid of, you'll have to replace the carpet. Or it might just be an old house. Repaint, wash drapes, upholstery, shampoo carpets, change filters, bleach everything possible.

The smell may be a hidden mold problem. Ever have any leaks in your walls? Try a small amout of pine oil in what you feel is the source area of the smell

Did you change your air filters, wash your curtains.

Did someone in your house spill something and didn't say anything.

OOOOH how about a leaky pip under your bathroom sinks or kitchen. If its eating away at your drywall that would cause a stink

Are you in an area where there are Possums? Or other animals? perhaps one died under your house...! to me it is the only explanation other than a rat in the walls dying or some other rodent!
