Communism covers a lot of ground and it's difficult to give you just what you're asking for.
My husband, who was from communist Hungary, told me about how religion was squelched in little ways, even though churches were still very much up and running.
There were songs he learned in his childhood that were simply children's songs, but when he came to the US, he discovered that the songs were originally hymns but the words were changed under communist rule so that they were no longer religious songs.

Also, in Hungarian, the letter C is pronounced with the K sound. Since nobody could publicly talk down on the Soviet Union, they would say the CCCP privately to each other "C, C, C, *ppt!*" As a kind of coughing and spitting, their own closet rebellion.

I was never with any Communist nation but I wish Communism would come back. And one thing I need to say, when my nation was being murdered none of those so called democratic nations stood up, the largest democratic country just gave logistic and moral supports to the genocidal force. But Communist Russia alone provided all the moral support we needed to eventually win the war and be liberated. Russia even provided us nation building help after independence. If they were not there like what it is now, I cant think how a small nation like us could rise up against atrocities and repression. There are lot of instances like this in the era when communism was alive. But what about now? Who listen to people?
