No, never go Walmart, Target or stores like that - you can find rather good instruments at low prices in online stores like musiciansfriend.com, music123.com, samash.com and such. I've been shopping in the first two for years, and nothing ever went wrong, great stores. If you want a good start, go for an Ibanez guitar and either a Line 6 or a Crate amp (I am thinkink about your money here, there are better companies but too pricey). If you really have to go low, Ibanez has starter packs that will get you going for little money but still within reasonable quality (the guitars and the amps will be of decent quality, no defects, no bad manufacturing errors and such).

gmark correct. Try to get something a little better. The reason is if it not a good guitar you will lose interest and stop. With something nice you can progress and not be wanting something better, then the money spent at wal-wort down the drain. I not sure what those sell for, let's just say $80. That $80 toward something good.

If you want to learn and not spend alot of money, they would be ok. You could also check out pawn shops in your area. They usually have good items for relatively cheap that would be better for you. If you want to spend a bit more than that go to a music pro shop and ask someone there about the best brands for your money.
