I am Italian, I can play the guitar and the piano/keyboards.
Now, I don't understand in English what do you mean by "air" guitar.... Is it a kind of acoustic guitar or something?
Thank you everyone

Air guitar is pretending to shred an electric guitar...in the air. It is generally during a solo in a song. Please, my Italian friend, do not attempt this...it's generally considered pretty lame in America.

It's like MIME for guitar. You pretend you are playing an insturment, but there's NO GUITAR.
There's an English phrase...Close but no Cigar. (means you don't win the prize)
This Air guitar is Close but NO guitar!
It started in the 1980's when HAIR BANDS were big. White men with long hair playing Rock and Roll Ballads.

It is an expression that means to act like you are playing guitar. In other words, playing air, and not a guitar. Like you did as a child pretending to hold a guitar in your hands and strumming along with the music. Like you might while singing Karaoke music. It means simply to "fake it"

"Air" guitar is an invisible guitar that someone (usually a male in their teens) pretends to play when they hear a piece of guitar-driven music (usually heavy metal - see "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" or "Wayne's World"). They get excited to the point that they feign being on stage and wailing on a guitar solo on a guitar that isn't there (no, it doesn't make sense to me either!). They're so moved by the musical spirit that they lose their inhibitions and sense of dignity, never to be regained again.

the air guitar is when you pretend to play the guitar when you don't actually have a guitar in your hands.
