Of cousre they do and the whole world sees it. The one thing that holds them back is the fact that several nations have the bomb and the result would be disastrous if any of those were attacked because some of them have the ability to respond-- Britain, France and probably some we don'y know about.
With regard to imperialsm, and forgetting the great wars, what caused the problems for the U.S. to go into Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Guatemala, poor little Grenada, Iraq, Hawaii, attempt on Cuba, Panama. Then we have the meddling in governments that we know about such as: ( by the CIA)
Causing the removal of a reasonably democratic gov't in Iraq and installing Saddam Hassein and supporting home for twenty years.
Forcing the ousting of a democratic government in Iran and replacing it with an absolute ruler, the Shah, a cruel despot. The Shah was so evil he was eventually overthrown by Islamists who set up a theocratic state which now the nemesis of U.S Mid-Eastern policies.
It seems that wherever there is oil or a chance to do business in favour of U.S. entities, the U.S. interferes internally.
You may not agree with this, but this is how the worlf sees " The Great Satan"
Causing the removal of the popularly elected Chilean President Allende. and his subsequent murder, and installing the dictator Pinochet and the list goes on. While in these cases the U.S. doesn't directly rule these states, they do become client states.

Imperialism is a moniker that Hegemonic powers like the Germans, Romans, and English bestowed upon themselves as they preyed upon mostly peaceful , defenseless nations committing wholesale robbery and mass murder in order to enrich their "Empires". something like the U.S has been attempting for the last 250 years. Its just not as easy today as it was lets say 2000, or 60 years ago.
America aspires to someday be a member of that elite league of countries so that one day when government appointed historians begin to document the next 60 years or so of American history.
It will, you can assured be documented for your enjoyment that America was once an Empire. Albeit, most probably for the shortest time in world history.
America most certainly is not a democracy.
If it were it would not be attempting to become an Empire.
Empires? really a pointless exercise.. don't you think
I am from a former empire.

Have you ever heard the term 'Manifest Destiny'? The United States tried to take over Canada in 1812 because of manifest destiny. Yes I think that US policies make your country look like an imperial empire wanabe. If the U.S tries taking over Canada or any other democratic country they will get their asses kicked.
Bush may think it is his right. The U.S. may think they are Canada's protector under N.A.T.O but you are not. Most countries on this planet love Canada.
Canada supplies most of the United State's softwood. Canada supplies most of the power to the U.S westcoast. We also supply electricity to alot of New York State and other parts of the U.S eastcoast. We can crush US ecconomy by turning off all of the power. If the US tries to invade then they are totally screwed. We are friends with China, The European Union, Japan, Israel, Russia and most of the civilized world. Invade us and the US will be conquered.
Do yourself a favour and get Republicans out of Senate. Vote Democrat. If you guys get a Democrat controlled senate Bush can be told no. You guys should call for George Bush's resignation. You should try to have him impeached and tried for war crimes.
