If what you intend to ask were, the origin of dream, the answer would be, its because of the play of the mind.
when awake your mind is active.Thats the consious part of the mind at play.Mind is a bundle of thoughts, desires and impulses. That is the reason why you cannot ever stop to think. All the sense organs are active.so that makes you aware.
when asleep all the sense organs are dormant.that is why you are not aware of things surrounding you.but, the mind is still active. Dream is the result of subconsious mind at play.It conjures up the image of subconsious thoughts and impressions and projects them visually.we call that as a dream.
people at the advanced stage of evolution, so called saints and yogis, have the capacity to fall asleep and at the same time be aware of their surrounding situations. To say, their function of sleep gets nullified. They dont even need the activity of sleep, but at the same time they remain ever fresh and active. This is because, they have annahilated and mastered their mind through certain techniques of yoga. They are not affected by dreams.
Sleep is a short death.Death is a long sleep.Liberation is the conquest of the death. Its the liberation from the world of dreams. Both, the living dream and the sleeping dream.
To saints and yogis , this world is a living dream.we think its real. Its not real for the fact that its constantly undergoing through change. you were not the same person in thought and in body some few years ago.you wont be same some 20 years from now.whatever undergoes change, cannot be termed as real. The proof of something real is that its always the same in three periods of time: past, present and the future. The only thing that is real is God.God was the same some million years ago, and will remain same some million years later.Thats truth. Thats real.Everthing else is a dream.Becase its not real.Because, its always deem to change.

there was a study done at a college some years ago about dreams. they are an important part of our lives.
at this college, they had people assigned to a partner who they followed around for the test. they would have the person wake the subject up whenever they started dreaming, so they wouldn't dream.(they could tell when they started dreaming by certain movements and twitches)
so these subjects were living their normal lives, except that they had no dreams. they did fine for a while, but after a couple weeks the subjects started doing weird things. some of them even attacked their 'follower' because they kept waking them up. eventually, they had to stop the tests because one of the subjects attempted to kill one of the partners.
during these tests, the subjects had to take tests on memory recall and basic facts. as the time went on, they scored progressively lower and lower on the memory tests.
dreams are the brain's way of processing and logging away the day's knowledge gained and memories made. they are an integral part of learning, and therefore sleep is also.
the lesson- sleep lots, it will give your mind and your body a rest and recuperation.
edit- the things you see in your dreams are usually not related to anything you learn. they may just appear to be something you were thinking about before you went to bed. while you see whatever you see in your dream, your brain is processing the information you acquired that day.
most all the time, what you see in your dream has no significance as to what happened or what will happen. it is just random sights you see.

Hmm..
I think its just an almost random brain activity, playing back things that we thought of throughout the day.
And because of its randomness, u sometimes get dreams that dont make sense and are just plain weird.

Depends on your belief and approach to interpreting them. If you take the Freud approach, like me, then dreams are our unconscious motives and emotions emerging in symbolizing ways. There's also the Jung approach, but I don't recall what exactly his approach is, but if you were interested, you can just research them on google.
