I think it is close between Washington and Lincoln. In The end I think Washington because It is he who defined the structure of the Executive branch of government. This achievement was momentous and much less publicized. Remember he was the first president and the constitution only outlined very loosely the power and structure of the presidency. . the development of the cabinet system was his legacy to future generation and is still in use today over 200 yrs later. Washington also was wise enough to champion along with Madison and Hamilton a stronger view of the federal govt. that enable the union to operate as a whole and not a sum of it's parts. So when I look at who was the greatest President I have to look at who did the best job and who had the most enduring impact on the office. No Other president had as an enduring impact as Washington which should tell you what a good job he really did in establishing the office. Now some 200+ yrs later the only Major change made in the basic structure of the executive was the introduction of term limits in the 1940's. and that my friends is why I deem him the greatest.

for discussion I would rate the top five presidencies as
1. Washington
2. Lincoln
3. Jefferson
4. FDR
5. Regan

Greatest President - George Washington. I know it sounds cliche, but he was the only president who ran pretty much unapposed, and really united America in a fragile time, right after the Revolutionary War

Greatest Leader - Abraham Lincoln, as he led our nation through the Civil War and kept our great nation together, instead of being splintered apart

In modern times I think it was Ronald Reagan. He managed to finish off the Soviet Union while still maintaining a high standard of living and cvic pride in America. JFK ran a close second for modern times. He had major stones to face down Kruschev. I'd have to nominate Lincoln for the greatest pres of early America. He led us into war against our own brothers and then re-united the country afterwards. Not many people could have done it.

FDR was our greatest leader. In modern politics a man in a wheelchair would never make it to high office but he stood firm and led our nation through the harshest challenge we had faced at that time.

Jurk - You really are a jerk if you think that the Clintons even begin to approach the accomplishments of these men.

Abe Lincoln-Greatest President...he was a just man who fought for the true meaning of "ALL men are created equal" ...guided America through a horrible civil war, and kept the union intact.

George Washington-Greatest Leader....Not only did he fight to free the colonies, he carried the leadership of a NEW America on his shoulders!---That's leadrship!
