Turkey is traditional for thanksgiving becuase it was the food that was availible to feed everyone at the very first thanksgiving. In Massachusetts it is still a wild animal and my friend has them often running through her backyard.

it isnt a MUST, my one friend eats only mac and cheese on Thanksgiving and it is NOT because she is poor (as a matter of fact, she is rather well off), she just eats the food that she is most thankful for having.

It is also popular for Christmas. And why not. A big one could serve maybe 20 people fairly cheaply.
