Ignoring the Constitutional complications that would arise from such a law, it would not be effective in keeping weapons out of the hands of the "bad guys." It would, however, make it more difficult for "good guys" who are conscientious about obeying the law to defend themselves.
You point out that there are already laws against possession of drugs, and yet our prisons are filled with drug offenders. This demonstrates that laws are not 100% effective at controlling behavior. Even if all weapons were illegal, those who want them would find ways to get them. Unfortunately, a large percentage of "those who want them" will be the bad guys out to do harm.
There will always be people who have weapons. If you feel threatened by them, you might want to study how to defend yourself against them. Warning: this might mean you will have to take up a weapon yourself. But at least you won't have to be scared anymore.
It is also important to teach children what to do in the presence of weapons. It is far easier to teach your children not to touch weapons than it is to prevent them from ever coming in contact with one.

Considering that criminals rarely go through a legal avenue to get weapons, I think gun control laws are stupid.
No, to your question. While it may not really be relevant any longer, right to bear arms is one of the rights given to our citizens. Not only that, guns don't kill people. Other people do - and you can kill someone with just about anything if you're going to kill. In a fit of rage, people get killed by blows to the head. Would you make it criminal then to own an ashtray or baseball bat?
Make the laws against those that have committed violent acts. If you've stolen or beaten someone, you get jail time. If you do something significant three times, you go to prison for life. That is how you get the criminals, and those that use guns (or anything else) for detrimental purposes, off the streets.

Guns dont kill people. People people kill people. Would you expect the same sentence for someone with a knife in their posession? Or a bow and arrow? There are just as many gun owners (percentage per capita) in Canada and Australia, but do we see the same percentage of violent crime? The answer is no. Strict gun control laws and harsher penalties will deter only the law abiding from owning or posessing a gun. Unfortunately there just isnt enough police manpower to enforce the gun control issue. To be a truly effective deterrent against crimes with guns, the penalty should be life without parole. That would definitaly make a few criminals think twice.

Why not enforce the laws that already exist? in texas we buy or sell a hand-gun we hafta submit to a background check before purchase gun shows are the only avenue around this. but criminals would love more gun laws it makes their jobs safer as the chances of entering a house that actually has a gun goes down. and did anybody forget the second amendment? you cannot make a law that infringes on the people's right to keep and own guns, for any reason. and someone please also think about this. when people of all kinds walked around with guns displayed was there less crime or more, or was it about the same?

A law like that, however well-intentioned, would not pass because (1) the constitution guarantees the right to bear arms and (2) there would be considerable lobbying from the NRA as well as private individuals who prefer to own guns for safety and recreational purposes.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get weapons out of the hands of anyone wishing to do harm with them. I just think that we cannot realistically reach a good balance at this point in history.

No, absolutly not!
Why do I not agree?
Because, I want a gun(s). If our country is ever invaded by foreigners come to make war, and they begin snooping around my house and my family, I want to be able to defend my house hold. It will be like cowboys and indians at the pattywakcrab ranch!
There are laws against having a weapon that is not registered to you, and laws against felons posessing them.
You must go through a process such as a background check, and registration in order to purchase a weapon.
You must be old enough to do so.
If ever they did pass a law against citizens purchasing weapons legally, there would always be a black market!

Hell no! You need to put a little more thought into this, buddy. If you really want to do something major about crime, I think a good start would be treating all the mentally ill people in prisons before they're released. That would have a FAR greater effect then outlawing guns. Guns are tools, like a wrench. It's people that do the killing.

Since I don't know if you are male or female, I will say it this way. You sound like a PERSON with a paper A**HOLE.
Criminals will get a "weapon" no matter what the laws are.
I certainly don't plan to give up my rights to bear arms, since I am a law abiding citizen that pays taxes.

U must remember that anything can potentially be used as a weapon in the first place, not just guns. If you think of it that way, we are all guilty.
Secondly, it depends what the weapons are used for. If a rancher owns guns to deter burglars, then it should be fair.
Why do you think we are encouraged to keep knives high up in the kitchen cupboard? Its to protect the children.

What defines a weapon? A car is considered a deadly weapon. As is a chainsaw, or a baseball bat.
And even if you limit it to guns, it'll deter law abiding people from having a gun. Career criminals will keep their weapons, and the crime rate will go up, as they won't have to worry about going up against someone else who has a gun.
