The Christmas carol "Carol of the Bells"? The lyrics as well as the music? Thanks.

Hi! The Carol of the Bells is an old Ukrainian Carol and is usually described as "traditional." That's a fancy term for music that was written before a society came to the idea that songwriters should be given lasting credit for their work. I suppose we should just say the original author is known only to the mists of time... The tune has been transformed over the years (like a lot of folk melodies) and it's hard to point and say that a particular version is the "original."

Some prefer to give credit to Mykola Leontovych as the composer. To be fair, he arranged the tune into a version much like the one we enjoy during the holidays today, but he was adapting the original folk tune with altered lyrics. The song continues to evolve as new musicians play with what must be one of the most elastic melodies we know.

its an old Celtic tune, and the words are traditional, no one really knows the original.
