Its more commonly reffered to as Dissociative Identity Disorder now and occurs in only a very small part of the population...and even then some people still are debating its existence at all. and while seperate identities exist often those identities are not even complete, so to say an identity is hostage would be to assume its like two people living in one body, which is not really the case, but instead may be a variety of personalities, some more developed than others versus having another "person" present.

Funny. I have been diagnosed with DID. I lived with it most of my life and didn't know it until about 4 years after I was in the hospital and released. It has been said that this is more common among females.Maybe You have it and don't even know it yet. Ever experienced any missing time? Strange reoccurring dreams or nightmares? Maybe you watched The comedy; Me Myself and Irene. Try watching Sybil and Hide and Seek. While there used to be institutions more and more people are just being labeled as criminally insane and put into the Prison system instead. You should read more about it if you're really interested in psychology. Just wait until the crap hits the fan in the next world war and see how many people go insane then.

Personality 2: Don't kill us...I am too young to die!!
Negotiator: Please son, put the gun down!
Personality 1: Don't move!!!
Negotiator: Don't do it...your life is worth more than that!!
Personality 2: Oh God...Have Mercy...I think I am going
