OK... here is a experimaent you could try for yourself to understand why ...Hold your arm out with say a coin in your hand or something to drop...swing your arm slowly in one direction...release the coin ...it didn't drop strait down did it? Same thing happens with rain it is released so far in the air with the clouds moving a high rate of speed , so to sum up what I am saying is ..the rain drop is already in a side way movement cause by the movement of the clouds when released. Hope this makes sence.
