Barges are either pushed by a tug or pulled by a tug. Sometimes the towline is up to a mile .There is no maximum volume of cargo. I have seen up to 12 barges attached and being pushed by a big tug.

Barges are rarely used in Oceans. they are meant for quieter waters such as creeks and rivers.
I've seen barges carrying no more than 12 tonnes and doing about 30km.

They come in all shapes and sizes. They also come in different types tailored for the job example tanker or refrigerated. They are towed by sea going tugs. these are usually used instead of a ship when water depth becomes a problem for a ship. Distance is not a factor.
