George sums it up best when he said of Kramer, "People should plunk down two thousand dollars to live like him for a week: Do nothing, fall ***-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors, and have sex without dating! That's a fantasy camp!"
It's not clear if he came into a large sum of money through an inheritance or the lottery, but every now and then one of his crazy schemes would succeed. He won $18k at a horse race, sued his favorite coffee shop when his hot coffee spilled and burned him (parody of the McDonald's lawsuit), etc.
I think it's funny that he's based on a real guy, Kenny Kramer who used to live next door to one of the Seinfeld creators. According to Wikipedia: "the creator was hesitant to use Kenny Kramer's real name because he suspected that Kramer would take advantage of this. David's suspicion turned out to be correct – Kramer created the "Kramer Reality Tour," a New York City bus tour that points out actual locations of events or places featured in Seinfeld. The "Kramer Reality Tour" is itself spoofed on Seinfeld in "The Muffin Tops" – when Cosmo receives money from catalog sales company owner J. Peterman for the use of his various stories in Peterman's biography; he develops a reality bus tour and touts himself as "The Real J. Peterman." Kenny Kramer also made both monetary and non-monetary demands on Castle-Rock Entertainment – all of which were met." lol

The character Kramer made money here and there as someone mentioned. The real Kramer, Kenny Kramer, was a comedian who worked with Larry David, and he made glow in the dark jewelry. Now he runs Kramer's Reality Tour in NYC.

It's never explained because basically, Kramer has had plenty of unique ideas like the cologne that smelled like the beach or the time when he sued his fave coffee shop. He's had lawsuits and won or he's lost but he always got some kind of reward. He also comes up with kooky ideas with Newman.

I was going to say he won like a lawsuit for something and lived off of that, but then I read "freeloader" and I would say that makes more sense. His clothes, food, and furniture came from all kinds of sources. What a great show. Does anyone watch Curb your Enthusiasm? Its hilarious.

He gets all his food from Jerry for a start.
I don't know how he pays his rent, maybe he's on a disability pension?
Mostly I think he's a freeloader though.

Does any of them work? They're always at Jerry's apartment, in a cafe eating or a bar drinking.
