I don't think he was athiest. I think he was probably agnostic, and had the hippie attitude of peace and love.

Wondering about "Imagine"? He didn't say to imagine "no God, too", he said to imagine "no religion, too."

No, he believed in a Higher Power (or said that he did) so he wasn't an atheist... He just wasn't christian.

Though I don't recall for certain, I think that, in fact, he was. You should be able to do some searching and find this fairly easily.
