No, they definatly did have an affair. They were introduced at a mutual friend's house, who she was also having an affair with. This was just before she started dating Frank Sinatra, and well after she and Arthur Miller got a divorce. She was really struggling at that point, and was in quite the downwards spiral.
She was really abusing sleeping pills and amphetamines during this point, and after the "Happy Birthday Mr. President" when she sang in a virtually see-through dress with no underwear, he called it off, because of the attention it brought to the affair.
