It's bad enough that the written letter and the written homework paper is mostly done on computer with no fuss or muss these days, but to dumb it down even further? Hm, just wondering, really.

Yeah,it bugs me a little bit.But not half as bad as people who don't know how to use the spell check.

Oh lord yes... I really hate it. I am a geek that way. I refuse to shorten my grammar or my sentences. But then again, we as a nation are becoming stupider by the day it seems.
As a college student, I really appreciate the computer and the freedom it gives me to create papers and help with spelling etc.; however, it is just laziness not to type out the whole word.
You might be interested in the writings of late Roman authors on just this subject (the 'dumbing down' of education and grammar, not computer short hand). Right before things really went to hell in a handbasket for the empire.... hmmmm.... connection?

It bugs me because far too many of the people who use computer short-hand (and it's not only young people--many old farts like me are just as guilty) consider this a proper way to communicate all the time...not just when e-mailing, or doing instant messaging. COMSH (COMputer Short Hand...ha-ha, get it? Sorry.) is fine, so long as people realize that there is just no substitute for good old proper written English, and make the effort to refine their writing skills.

Yes and learning to spell before you start writing things is also usually a good idea.

as with any method, I think it just takes getting used to. Some people do not take to slang and colloquium very well ether. But language is constantly changing.
